Grey Phantom

chalk man

Oh woe, grey Phantom that haunts my mind,
why won't you leave me alone?
I can't help you, I don't know what to do.
We could help each other.
If only you'd let me see you,
instead of merely flitting from shadow to shadow,
cast by the lights above the stage.
Are you, too, a ghost from ages past?
A long forgotten memory no one cares for,
a thing tossed away for better things?

We are two of a kind, I think.
Both abandoned, both not cared for,
cast disgustedly aside into the shadows cast
by those lights hanging above the stage.
Who forgot you, Phantom?
Was it,
like me,
one you once called a friend?
Or was it by others?
Ones who didn't even stop
to see the face hidden behind the mask?
Who cast you away without a thought,
without looking for the real you?

Come, sit beside me and take off your mask,
I promise I won't bite,
nor cast you idly away.
Come, talk to me.
We'll learn much of each other here.
in the shadows cast,
by the hanging lights above us.
